No R variant = no enthusiasm.

It looks awesome, but I'll wait five years til and take advantage of Volvo rapid depreciation. Figure I'll be able to pick one up for about $5000 at that time. #lovevolvos

Suzanne-

It will have an "R-Design" variant in the near future...upgraded looks, no upgraded performance though. Their T6 engine is getting upgraded to 304 HP though, which will put the car above the previous R HP levels.

Jameson, are they just putting an iPD chip on the T6 to get more horsepower? ;)

I'm pretty sure I'm in the minority, but I find it disappointing. The concept was crisp, delicate and had 'wow' factor. This just feels lumpen and heavy. That nose and front overhang screams front wheel drive...from a design language perspective it feels miles off the premium kinds of things Audi and BMW do.

JoeSimpson-

The T6 will be AWD standard, and the car will only be offered as a T6 AWD during its initial release...just like the XC60.

Michael-

Now don't go knocking Volvo already...

yeah, agree with Suze (can i call you Suze? no? too bad), no R=no boner. don't really like the front: too busy. what's with with the strange facets, those weird little lights? it has a very 'committee-designed' styling to it, contrast from C30, even XC60

Jameson - The R "Design" makes my eyes bleed. If it doesn't have an engine upgrade it doesn't deserve the R badge. End of story.

trx0x - I've been called worse.

Volvos aren't about tire-shredding performance. They offer a different take on luxury, and I really like that. No R = OK

The point of the 850R/V70R/S60R was never to take on the track-bred beasts from the M or AMG divisions, it was about making the safest car in the world incredibly fun to drive. It was in a class all by itself and developed a sizable niche following. No R = Not okay. I'm prepared to debate this long into the night.

Well since trx0x started the trend...

Suze-

I wish very much that Volvo would create the R with an engine performance upgrade (although the R-Design cars do have performance suspension and steering), but unfortunately for R fans, Volvo's core target is not interested in engine upgrades, and in times like these, Volvo needs to focus on its core consumers.

I disagree that it was in a class all of its own. M3s and AMGs were making power comparable to the R in its day.

Did you watch the Top Gear segment with Clarkson and his toothpaste green S60R? Take careful note of what he said.

Jameson - I know, I just tend to hold onto ideas until the bitter end. Or, in the case of the impending Geely acquisition, the awful, grisly end.

Clarkson is an idiot.

Banovsky-

Yeah, but when we took our Volvo S60R out on the track against the M3s, Corvettes, Cadillacs, Vipers, and Audis, the R failed miserably. 650 HP out of a 2.5 L 5-cylinder engine was just too much.

The Volvo S60 run by KPAX does well now in SWC GT, but they also have significantly decreased competition...nothing compared to the teams with which we were competing.

@jamesonriley As you know, a good road car isn't necessarily a good race car. ;)

@michaelbanovsky - Very true, although I always wanted to put Volvo's V8 into the S60R and make that the racecar...

My perfect Volvo S60R would be the new body style with suspension upgrades, AWD, and a Volvo tuned V8 under the hood. Get over 400 HP out of the engine, and you'd have a true M3 competitor on your hands.

Jameson - I want in on that S60 V8 action.

seems convoluted to want more from a company that isn't really into the hp or american muscle niche. Its hot for an s60 (& if it balances fuel/power) going the homogenous styling route as of late

Also, wouldn't any one that could easily afford one do so regardless of percieved flaws?
